A need to prepare a preliminary study for the new exploration phases using offset oil field data to maximize the understanding and define the reasons for non-successful dry and or successful exploratory plays over a wide range of area. The main target of this study is to locate the best hydrocarbon possible plays over the candidate fields in order to draw a map for future use by the exploration team using the detailed company data and confirmed by seismic. This work can help as a guide to the detailed studies of the company and improve the concentrations over the successful areas rather than consuming a big part of the budgets in drilling many dry wells before reaching the successful discovery.A statistical approach was inherited in order to achieve this target. During this approach a big area was be studied for the technically accepted reasons for best trap. Four factors will be used to define a static trap including, Magnetic, Gravity and check with Methane and Helium concentrations. Hydrocarbon migration will be applied also to the previous four factor concepts in order to define a dynamic trap in which hydrocarbon was migrated and trapped in an anomaly area and defined by the difference of gravity compared to the surrounding. Some location may not be possible to confirm the four checks, meanwhile in some areas the four factors could confirm. In all the selected locations the factor of hydrocarbon migration should be confirmed. After defining the locations that conform the best hydrocarbon plays, a new check will be performed in order to pick up the best of the best locations. This check could include either confirm of the static and dynamic factors, or part of the static factors with the dynamic factor as studies in the offset wells. So, a map of the offset successful fields was prepared and studied carefully, this successful discovery map was used during the study in order to get the right understanding in the area of study. Successful fields / wells were distributed over magnetic map, gravity map, Helium distribution, Methane maps and studied carefully in order to understand the common successful reasons for the collected data fields. The different successful features were then applied to the nominated area of work. Incorporation of this work to company’s detailed studies as double check will provide a confirmation to the company’s studies success in case of the match between the results and will be improving the understanding and learning curves of the company exploration teams.Big concentration was given to the hydrocarbon migration process including the source of hydrocarbon and the direction path of filling the trap. Understanding hydrocarbon migration and application to this study offered a dynamic approach to the static parameters used in this study.Based on the availability of big data of the already drilled wells over the world and the Arabic gulf area, it was easy to conclude in a precise way the most common reasons for the successes and failure occurred in the oil and gas discoveries. Studying these big data base of the world and QATAR oil and gas potentials enabled to define a methodology for success in the future wells that is achieved through the following steps:•Studying regionally and the offset successful fields and define reasons for successes and failures.•Comparing the geological settings between the successful and non-successful wells.•Understanding hydrocarbon migration process for every field using offset fields data.•Check the type of trapping mechanisms in the field to define the way of trapping utilizing the magnetic maps and define the possibility of trapping using the gravity maps.•Confirm the presence of hydrocarbon using a positive indication of hydrocarbon like methane and helium surface seepage. These types of maps are used as a support and direct indication.in addition to this study a detailed geology about Qatar will be discussed
