Casebook on Contract Law 13th Edition by Jill Poole

I doubt that even the much-missed late Alistair MacQueen could have envisaged when I handed
over the manuscript for the first edition of Casebook on Contract Law that more than two decades
later I would be handing over the thirteenth edition. I fondly recall Alistair?s great delight that
I had managed to submit by the deadline (a feat not always repeated for subsequent editions)
and insisting, with his usual exuberance, that I take away a bottle of wine for my efforts. Over
subsequent years and editions, I found that I, like many others, had much to thank him for. He
was always supportive and optimistic and the Alistair MacQueen Memorial Grant Foundation is
a fitting tribute to his memory. I also recall that, as was (and is) fairly typical of me, and much to
everyone?s amusement, I then spent some weeks reducing the size of the original manuscript for
the first edition by some 50%! Students would have required a large wheelbarrow to transport it!
(I still have a copy of that original manuscript, although obviously not the bottle of wine.)
This thirteenth edition of Casebook on Contract Law continues my aim of providing a structured
discussion of contract case law which is as up-to-date as possible. My intention is that this
casebook should be equally useful for students whether they wish to read about individual case
decisions, promote their understanding of a topic, or both. Each chapter is therefore intended to
provide a readable, detailed, and structured account of relevant principles as developed through
the case law. The emphasis reflects the fact that contract law modules invariably require students
to develop skills of application through the use of hypothetical problem questions so that it is necessary
to be familiar with a large number of cases as illustrations of the development of principle.
The approach reflects my emphasis on the most recent examples of key principles.
